In Chinese Medicine, earth is the phase that each element must transform through to become the next. When the winter months (or water phase) transition into spring (or wood phase), there are 18 days that the seasonal movements are in the element of earth. This allows all natural phenomena to connect back into the basis for all transformation: the ability to digest and transform, which belongs to the element of earth.
In our yoga practice, the earth element is strengthened and energized through the third chakra, where all the organs of digestion live, including the Spleen and Stomach. In the Bheemashakti Yoga system, we energize and strengthen these chakras through spinal twisting. Spinal twists are considered the most important dimension of all seven dimensions because of its ability to regulate and stimulate the element of earth, which gives root to all other elements.
This uniquely timed, 21 day Mandala will be held during the earth phase between winter and spring. During the first seven days, students will lay down the foundations in all seven dimensions with special attention and focus paid to developing a supple and aligned spinal twist. Week two, focus will be on energizing the fourth chakra with backbending in preparation for week three where we move to the upper chakras with hand and forearm stand practices.
As we move through the seven chakras, from root to crown, we will use spinal twisting to integrate, harmonize and digest not only our practice, but our consciousness as it shifts from the inward reflection of winter to the up and outward movement of spring.
All levels, peoples and bodies are welcome.
